I am a doctor working at a peripheral clinic of a non-profit organization in Japan. I see about 150 A-bomb survivors a year. Some of them come to my clinic to do an annual health check-up and some of them come to see me regularly due to their chronic illness. My patients raised money to send me to New York, because they had a particularly strong hope to abolish nuclear weapons.
You know, the carcinomas rate of A-bomb survivors is twice that of the general population. A-bomb survivors are now over 65 years old now. They will get cancers in the coming 10 or 20 years. They are afraid of getting cancers. The tragedies of Hiroshima and Nagasaki have not ended yet. We must make an early diagnosis for them and give them the best treatments and support possible.
The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the first human experiments with the A-bomb. Not only more than 200 thousand people were killed in 1945, but also the causalities are still increasing now. And the effects on their children are yet to be seen. The entire results will be known in the next 40 or 50 years. We must view the historical facts honestly.
You want to make the 21st century peaceful and safe, and to abolish nuclear weapons. To realize such goals, you must have a correct understanding of the war history of the 20th century to realize them. Japan committed many war crimes in the 20th century, such as the Manjin Massacre, Unit 731’s live human experiments and the Japanese army sex slaves. These are the historical facts. We Japanese must take responsibility for them and decide not to commit such crimes again.
But, not only did Japan but the U.S. also committed war crimes. The great air raid over many Japanese cities and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki killed more than 526 thousand civilians. Americans must know these facts and feel remorse for what they have done. I want president Obama to come to Hiroshima and Nagasaki and to apologize for dropping the A-bombs. Obama says, “Yes we can,” but it is not enough for me to hear that. I want to hear, “I have abolished nuclear weapons.”
Let’s learn from the historical facts and make the 21st century safe and peaceful. If we all know the historical facts, we can abolish nuclear weapons while the A-bomb survivors are still alive.
