A Danish movie, In a Better World

I watched a Danish movie “In a better world”.  This movie won the awards, Oscar and Golden Globe. The main subject of this movie is that we should revenge or choose another better way?

The main character, Anton, was a Swedish doctor who partly lived in Denmark and partly worked at a Sudanese refugee camp. He said to one of his sons, Elias, who had been bullied by students of his school and did revenge, that if you hit him as revenge, he hit you, and then it never end.

His thought was right. But he couldn’t observe his faith.

He let the local people in the refugee camp lynch a monster warlord, who was treated for a wounded leg by him against the anger of his staff and other local people, because the lord showed contempt for his victims. He worried about the incident very much.

Elias and his friend Christian tried to blow up a car, owned by a man who had hit Anton violently. But the blow injured Elias heavily.

Elias’ mother told Christian that he was a psychopathic murderer. He misunderstood Elias was dead. He tried to kill himself by jumping from a roof of a silo. He was rescued by Anton.

Revenge makes revenge. But it is difficult not to take revenge for an unfair violence. Nevertheless the attacks on 11 September in 2001 and the continuing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan teach us that revenge is catastrophic. It is a realistic truth.  We should choose another better way to overcome an unfair violence. We must make a better world without violence.
