Ground zero was Matuyama-tyo, Nagasaki city. The Urakami Cathedral, which was known as the largest in Asia, was situated about 500 meters northeast of the epicenter. Many Japanese Christians live in Nagasaki, and especially in the Urakami area.

Christians in Japan have observed their faith, often in spite of merciless suppression, since 1567. More than few of them were killed by their landlords. Christianity was only admitted as a faith in 1873, after the Meiji Restoration. Urakami, Nagasaki has been the center of Christianity in Japan since then. The Urakami Cathedral was destroyed by the atomic bomb on August 9, 1945. There were about 12,000 believers, and 8,500 of them died from the atomic bomb. The total number of casualties from the bomb numbered 70 thousand.

Did you know the atomic bombs didn’t kill the aggressive imperialists, but did faithful Japanese Christians and Japanese common people?
